Costumes

The costumers are vital for any film however in thrillers and it is apparent that you can distinguish between good and bad by the costumers worn. I anaysed Sorority Row and Edan Lake as they both fit in with the thriller genre however are very different as one is set in a posh area of teenagers and the other is set out in a wooded area where there are not other people.

Sorority Hero characters which are the victims

Edan Lake Victim

The victims in both the films are all wearing day to day clothing, however when the film takes off the clothing is always unsuitable for the situation making them look more vunerable. The clothing is generally a high colour to show that they are 'good'. The victims within both films have clothing that becomes dirty or torn as the film goes on. In Edan Lake it is set in wooded area which means it would become dirty because of the mud and that is without any other effects such as blood from a wound. This is something which as a group we will need to consider as our trailer is set in a similar area to Edan Lake.

 Sorority Row Villian

Edan Lake Villians

The villians in both the films are all wearing dark clothing to highlight to the audience that they are bad. In Sorority Row the villians face is covered in order to hide his identiy from the audience and this is something we need to think about in our film as we do not want to give away who the villians are to early on as they could potentially be someone unexpected or know to the victim.
In Edan Lake the teenagers are wearing steorotypical clothing so that intially all teenagers can relate to them, however this then changes because of their actions throughout the film. The villians in our A2 trailer are of around the same age as those in Edan Lake so it will be benefical to dress them in sterotypical teenage boy clothing. For example; jeans, jacket and trainers.

Our Trailer costumes:
The costumes for our trailer will show the two villians in dark clothing covering their faces and the victims will be in lighter clothing which is fit for the situations which they think they are going to. The girls head for for a camping trip so will be shown in wellies, and camping tear such as tracksuits and waterproofs. This means we are keeping to the conventions as villians want to hide their indenty which will be done with the dark clothing to help disskies them as the setting is dark. The victims are fitting in the clothing they are wearing because like other images shown they are all dresses for the situation they think they are in or going too.

Decision on Magazine Cover

Billing Block

A billing block is used for films to reference the order and other aspects of how credits are presented for films.
Within a billing block there are key conventions which are:
  • Positioned at the bottom of the poster
  • All written in capital letters
  • Names are in a larger font than all other text
  • Underneath the billing block are the film companies used e.g. Warner Brothers
Examples of Billing Blocks:
Shutter Island Film Poster

127 Hours Film Poster

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory Film Poster

The three film posters sourced are all from different genres such as, comedy and thriller yet they all follow the same suit when it comes to the billing block. The coventions are all there such as the font sizes, posistioning on the poster and the information included

Sucker Punch Billing Block
.
When Creating our own billing block we as a group followed the fomat and layout of the 'Sucker Punch' billing block for guidance.

Our Billing Block:

I feel this billing block is effective as it follows conventions of, size, fonts, layouts and information from professional billing blocks. We decided upon white font due to the genre of film. The trailer and poster are going to have a dark background to be in keeping with the darkness of the film, so having a white billing block would make it stand out and look prominate against all else around.

Roles within the group

After completion of our AS media course in year 12 we decided to stay in the same group as we each offered different strengths, skills and qualities. In addition we could see where these skills etc. lie and use them to our advantage this year.
My role within the group lie in helping edit the footage, acting and designing of the magazine with Shannon.
Lat year I was given the role of acting and stuck to this role this year as I very much enjoyed it. As for the magazine I helped create this with Shannon. Shannon edited the image and I designed the layout of text in order for it to look like a professional magazine.
My weakness lied in editing; so this was a skill I wanted to improve. Throughout the process I was shown how to work final cut express in order to aid the editing of our trailer and this then became one of my roles within the group as I was able to edit part of the footage to make the final trailer.

Magazine Images

All the images below were taken by Katie Parkinson as want all three victims to be on the cover of the Total Film magazine. Generally there is only the main character on the cover of film magazines however we are not totally breaking a convention as other films have been known to do this; such as Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Carribean, King Kong and Harry Potter.
The reason for wanting all three victims on the cover is to highlight to the reader the close bond between the girls and that the film is very much about the three of there trails rather than just one.

This image was taken with the three characters infron of an old store container however by looking at this image it is clear to see it was not totally sucessful.
The sucess was in the posistioning of the girls as they look united, however the downfall is in the lighting and facial expressions. All the characters are looking in different directions and the lighting is high key which does not help portray the film genre.

This image was taken in a field opening, however was quickly discarded. The reason for this is that is does not give over a scene of the emotions of the film, because the lighting is so bright and the charaters have quite a vage look upon there faces. The is also a shadow which is across the characters faces which would not be adiquate for the film magazine cover. I like the positioning of the characters however the lighting and setting are not spot on.

When this photo was taken, initally it looked effective because all the characters were gazing into the camera  which looked intense. However it became apparent this image would not be suitable because when we put text on it would cut across the faces because they are too close to the edge. This shows the spacing of the girls is not correct. This resulting in this shoot being discarded.

The postioning that the characters are in we all agreed was best as the main character is central. By having the charaters stagered rather than all in the same line adds depth to the shot as well as highlighting that I am the main focus of the film.
The reason why this photo is better than all others is mainly down to facial expressions and lighting. The intense look on all the girls faces shows they are all in the same position and because they are all looking directly into the camera vunerably it draws the audience in. The facial expression on the girls faces matches that of what is happening in the trailer, and to add to this they are all whether clothing from the film in order to keep them in character. The reason behind doing this is that a key convention is that the actor is in character on the front of the magazine.
The lighting is correct in this shot as it is consistant all over with no shadows which is important. This makes it easier when editing because if we were to darker the light on the computer it would then be consistant all over making the magazine look professional.

This was one of a number of shots taken infront of the old storage container and this was one of the shots we experiented which the positions of characters. We decided to keep the main character central but have her in the background and the other two in the foreground.
The reason this shot was not used is because of the key convention it broke. We were already challenging conventions as it is rare to have three on the cover, but also it is waist up generally and this was a long shot.

Poster Images

This shot was a high angle shot so it would make the girl appear smaller in order to give the impression of vunerabilty. The two figures in the background were there to look as those they were coming after her and the use of their dark costumes highlights that they are the protagonist.
If this shot was used for the poster it would be landcape, however when taking the real shoots the lightly would need to be dark in order to confirm the genre and the darkness/ intensity of the film.
To conclude I like the angle of the shot as well as the fact you get a good sense of the setting, however as the girl is at the bottom of the shot it would be hard to position the title correcting without cutting to much of the actress out.

This image was taken in amongst the trees in order to give the impression the character is hiding from something or someone. This shot isn't very conventional as it is purely a shot of her and very little else. It would be hard for the audience to grasp the setting of the film and the situation of the girl.
We rejected this shot for the poster because it would be very hard to position text such as the title, billing block and release date due to the fact the posistion of the girl is at an angle. As a group we wanted a conventional poster and this shot would break many conventions.

This shot was created in order for the audience to clearly see the victim, peroetrators and the setting. The body language and facial expression of the victim work well as she is gazing forward vunerably. This is what will draw the audience in as it is central and the strong gazing look upon her face makes the audince connect. From this it gives over fear and antisipation to the audience as they would want to know what is happening to the girl who looks frightened. The two figures in the back ground hold a strong and manly stance giving the impression that they are a threat.
This is my favourite shot taken as it clearly shows the genre through the use of setting, clothing and expressions. There is also a clear central focus on the girl however then your eyes move futhure forward onto the perpertrators and it is easy to distinguish between who is who.
One weakness of this is the lighting and if they were the shot we decide to use the lighting would need to be dimmed in order to strength the sense of danger.

Risk Assessment

A risk assessment is a step in a risk management procedure. A risk assessment used to determine any threats or hazards in an operation. A risk assessment is required for our event in order to eliminate any potential health and safety issues. The main steps in a risk assessment are to; identify the hazards, decide who might be harmed and how and then evaluate the risks and decide on the precautions. Afterwards in is import to put the precautions in.

The risk assesment is based on who situation when filming and the potential hazards posed upon us.
