Promotional Package
Overview of promotional packages:
Promotional packages are used by the film industry in order to promote the film. Marketing is a crucial part of the film process because audiences need to be made aware of the film before it comes out in cinema. This can be done in a number of ways:
- In cinema
- Posters
- Magazines
- Bill boards
- Buses
- London Taxis
- Internet e.g. Facebook, YouTube
Our promotional package:
Our package consisted of a poster, magazine cover and trailer in order to grab the attention of the target audience in a number of ways. Within each product we wanted all three to link through the message given out to the audience. This message is that of fear, anticipation and intensity. Through the poster the visual of fear is shown which links with the magazine as intensity is shown on the faces of the character. Both packages link with the trailer as this also provokes strong emotion into the viewer.

Importance of audience feedback
Audience feedback is vital to aid the evaulation of the groups final products.
The reason audience feedback is so cricial in media is due to the fact it is the audience which bring in revenue causing the sucess of a film. Having the correct marketing with a productional package helps to do this.
The aim of any film is to satisfy the audience which it targets; and through audience feedback we can see if this has been achieved. We can see this by the comments and suggestions left by those asked.
Audience feedback can be obtained in a variety of ways:
The reason behind audience feedback being vital for our evaultion is as follows:
We as a group can see what the audience like and dislike, which can then be considered if we were to carry out the same or similar task again. This will make our products even better as we will know the target audiences response to certain things early on. For instant with our poster ;audience feedback on the poster stated they liked the lighting as it looked as through the darkness was closing in on the victim. This is benefical to our group as we wculd see what went well from the viewers perspective and then use this within our other promotional packages.
Also with audience feedback we could find out ideas and viewpoints which we may not have considered, such as reasons why they think something has been done. This helped when analysising because we could go into more detail on why things were done and for what reason. An example of this is a comment by Vicky on the poster, 'The dark edges that lead into the lighter centre creates a vibe of fear and foreshadows the idea that something bad will happen'.
Orginally I thought this shoot was effective to show the 'good' of the victim as she is in high lighting compared to the rest but this is another valid point which can be used when evaluating on why the light was as such.
The main reason for wanting audience feedback on the final products was so that as a group and individuals we would be able to analyse futher because of having the audience comments. As the comments are that of our target audience we were able to obtain indepth and valid anaylsis which we could review and then use as feedback for personal progress next time.

Magazine Feedback
Fom this footage of audience feedback we have gained both postive and constructive feedback which has helped us to evaluate our piece.
The postive feedback was to do with the characters and positioning; the comment made was, 'the girl to the left looks as though she has been through an aldeal', ' the girl on the right looks apprehensive' and 'the girl in the middle looks strong and the leader.'
This is effective feedback as it has confirmed to us that our magazine portrayal has been effective to the audience. When planning we wanted to create this effect for the audience so that they could begin to understand the girls situation for the girls as a group and individually.
The constructive critism of the magazine is that the colouring of QueensDown Warren does not show up enough and that if the colouring of the girls jump was paler it could help. I think when evaluating it is fair to say the title of the film on the magazine was not totally effective and did not acheive what we originally planned for. Intially we wanted the title of the film and the image to the two things which stood out the most. However unfortunately this was not the case with the title of the film. In order to correct this we would have to go for another font in order to make the text more stricking. However to justify our reasoning for not changing this is becasue the font style, Didiot, was used throughout the other promotions so we wanted to keep it the same so that the audience could become familar with it and associate it to QueensDown Warren.
After Effects Tutorial
Adobe After Effects software lets you create a cinematic visual effect with motion. After Effects has built-in text and shape extrusion, new mask feathering options, and the fast, and a 3D camera tacker. After Effects is a complex programme which is very interacact piece of software which is used by professionals in the media industry, to create effects for footage and text.
Adobe After Effects was used to create the film title, 'Queens Down Warren' and trails of production companies in case we created our own company instead of using a well known one.

This was the youtube viedo which helped us as a group understand how to work the Affect Effects programme. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Rh5wmtEBrY
The movement of the text helps to portray a sense of pace which is fast within the trailer. This helps to show the audience that events are occurring quickly and change is rapidly happening within the film. However the text movement was not chosen due to the texts not being central as well as the lack design making it hard to identify the genre from the text used. The reason why the Queens Down Warren title motion was not chosen was due to the fact it does not stand out from the other captions used.
This effect was created as a trail for our production company: Cameo. The effect was to look like mud was falling leaving the craving of the word Cameo in the hard mud. The idea behind this was to keep the production company inkeeping with the film. The trailer is set in an abandoned area which was muddy and this is also shown in the characters with mud on the clothing and face. Although the production company visual would be in keeping with the film, the duration was 30 seconds which is to long for the company to be shown. However we did not want to cut the duration down becasue then the effect is lost. This resulted in the production company being discharged.
This is another Cameo Production effect which we created. The idea was to get a strong flash of red across the title to fade it out. Becasue Adobe After Effects is so complex this became increasingly hard to do. We did manage to do this however the effect given didnt make it look overly professional as there were still things which needed to be twicked.
Both of the above were trails to lead to the final title below. The effect was put in in order to show danger within the trailer. This was later discharged becasue like other trails it was hard to get the effect to look realistic. Although we as a group liked the concept we could not the effect exactly how we wanted.
This our final piece created on Adobe After Effects, and was the one we used within our trailer. The idea behind this title effect was the have the text in amonsgt the bright red. The reason is because red signifies danger and blood and it looks as though the title is being consumed by danger, because of the way in which the flashes of red close in around the title.

Audience Feedback of Trailer
The printscreen below was feedback on our final A2 trailer which was posted on Facebook in order to receive comments from a wide range of people.
The comments which we had on Facebook show a postive response in relation to our trailer. Comments had words such as, 'scary' which is a good point for our group as that was the effect we wanted from the audience.
The last comment of, ' good camera and cutting work' highlights that we as a group were able to do this effectively to portray the genre to the audience. I feel if we did not film and edit this way then the trailer would not be scary even if the shots we the same. The fast pace in vital areas and the short cuts of footage make the audience feel panicked and a feeling of intensity is given off. The feedback shows that is worked.
Review from Vicky, who is in our target audience range at 16:
"I thought that the way it was happy at the beginning and scary from the middle-end was really effective as it shows the characters in their life being happy and acting like teenagers then the bad things happen to them which makes it appealing to me as I can relate to how it would feel as I am the same age. I think the music really helps create the thrill for the trailer as it builds up the tension and makes you anticipate something to happen at the end, like the girl being dragged. The man that says "i will find you" sounds very strong and scary which makes the girl look even more vunerable. It also indicates the challenge of a chase accepted, showing that the girl has a struggle ahead of her. The title sequence is very effective because the red symbolises many things that could be related to the trailer; evil, blood and hell which gives the idea of the genre".
Review from Alex, who is also in our target audience range at 18:
"A wide range of camera angles utilised along with hand held sections to engage and draw in the audience. Progressive soundtrack building suspense throughout the clip. High tension created from the outset. Leaves the audience wanting more. Professional credits".
Review from Mandy, who is also in our target audience range at 17:
"The music helped engage me from the beginning and heightened the sense of tension. Text screens were well used to give the audience an idea of the premise of the film. The trailer gave me goosebumps. The scene where someone was dragged away stuck in my mind in particular. I would like to see the actual film to find out what happens!"
By combining the comments made and our decisions for the trailer I feel we have made it a sucess overall.
The comment, ' he music help engage me' was effective in stating what a good job was done with the music in our trailer. As a group we wanted the music to constrast each other which was why we used fast and slow paced sections and as well as this for it to be fitting with the visual. The reason for doing this was to enage and help the audience to feel, tension and suspense, and this was achieved by our target audience commented on the way they felt and how the music 'engaged' them.
The comment, '... happy at the beginning and scary from the middle-end was really effective as it shows the characters in their life being happy and acting like teenagers then the bad things happen to them which makes it appealing to me as I can relate to how it would feel as I am the same age...'. This helps to show the effectivenss of our film as our message was fate doesn't discrimate. The person asked said they can relate which highlights that the girls in the film are ordinary and come from a place much like the viewers, however it the trailer highlights that even ordianary girls who are going out with their friends can end up in a terrible situation which is life threatening. This helps justify that are trailer was a sucess as they message we wanted to portray was recieved.

Poster Feedback
This is a screenshot of are final poster for QueensDown Warren which we uploaded onto facebook in order to receive feedback from our target audience. Those that commented on the poster were analytical in there feedback which gave us postive and contructive critism in order for us to go away and correct anything that is needed.
In addition to this we asked others what they also thought:
Vicky, 16:
The question asked if this poster appealed to her, how it made her feel and what she thought it represented and this is what she replied:
"The film poster definitely appeals to me and my age group as you can clearly see that the main character is a teenager, therefore making her feelings and emotions relatable for me as a viewer which is important to maintain the attention of the viewer"
"The dark edges that lead into the lighter centre creates a vibe of fear and foreshadows the idea that something bad will happen, this is also shown by the two dark figure behind the victim. It makes the girl look vulnerable as they are creeping up on her."
The feedback is all very postive from Vicky which highlights to us that the poster was effective in what we tried to get across.
We as a group decided to add dark edges to the poster and this was commented on by Vicky which helps used justify and for us to feel confident in our decisions for doing this. The dark edges were there to show that the men are closing in on the victim.
Jack, 18:
"The poster appeals to me because from the red font and dark image you can tell that it is a thriller which is my favourite genre"
"The poster makes me feel on edge as you can tell that something bad is going to happen to the girl during the film because of the two men in the background look intimidating and stronger than the girl"
Simon, 53:
"should be a separtion from the figures in the background and the girl's head.
very good, wouldnt look out of place with other professional thriller film posters. Focus draws down the bottom of the page and onto the girl"
The first point of feedback from Simon gives us constructive critism of the posisitioning. When looking back I think its safe to say the postion of the men could be brought backwards slightly. If we did this the effective would be even greater as it would show the figures havent got to the victim yet.
Additional comments from others were:
"Attracts attention"
"Gives a feeling of mystery and suspence"
"Makes you want to know what is going to unfold in the film"
"Complies coventions"
"The title draws you into the main focus of the girl then from that attention goes to the men in the background"
